A/C goes out at 5:30 in the afternoon the Friday before Labor Day. I think it is either a capacitor or the compressor fan. But there’s no place open to get parts on a Saturday morning on Labor Day weekend.

Might as well go camping.

Happy Labor Day, Oppo!

Update: I verified it is the capacitor, fan motor, or both. The only supplier that is normally open on Saturday is closed for the holiday. Everyone wants triple their normal rates to come out. $200 minimum if it is just the capacitor (a $20 part), $600 if it is the motor.

Looks like it will be a hot weekend.

Update 2: looking for a cheap window unit big enough to condition our living room. Cheapest one found so far is over $300! Bah!

Update 3: I am fortunate that the compressor is working fine and it is only the fan and capacitor which need to be replaced. I managed to kludge together a temporary fan to get the unit running. I also activated the scout network and found a window unit I can borrow if the temporary fan fails in the rain. Did I mention it is raining here?

Thanks for the support and suggestions!

Update 3: so the temporary hack kept everything running for one day (Saturday), but the capacitor finally got bad enough that it wouldn't start the compressor Sunday morning. I called out the Scout network. One guy lent us a window unit to keep a portion of the house cool. Another found us the parts we need to make the repair. On the Sunday before Labor Day. He normally doesn't keep the particular motor and capacitor needed for our a/c unit on his truck. But a series of events left him with the special-order parts I need. Thank God. I will be making the repair as soon as the sun comes up this morning. Hurry up, sun!

They have online service 24/7. But anything shipped today won't get here until Tuesday when the local branch is open anyway.

Wrong a/c unit. Maybe we will make a road trip and just stay in the cool car all day long.

Have any neighbors you don’t like? Just swap Caps!

You could plead your case to a local A/C company too. I bought a Cap off of a guy last year that way.

Ha!

One of the local a/c companies will be glad to come out. Just add $100 to the top for the holiday weekend.

You check amazon? They’re doing same/one day delivery this weekend on some items (have to check by item) to my house. I’ve got an a.c. capacitor from them before.

Edit: verified there’s a bunch they’d deliver here tomorrow; don’t know your specs but these are available in my region for Sunday delivery:

Try begging on facebook? Everyone I know who uses window units usually has a spare from their last upgrade.

Denver sold out of air conditioners and swamp coolers in town a couple years ago when we stayed around 100 degrees for a week. It was miserable (my house doesn't have a/c and probably never will).

It's a good idea. I'll have to put my begging hat on and give it go.
